Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 Review: Pet Hair and a Swap-In Mop

Two jobs share one slot on the Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1. With its dust bin in place, it runs as a vacuum that empties itself at the base. Swap in the mop module, and it vacuums and mops in the same pass, though it can no longer empty itself.

As a vacuum, it is strong on dog and cat hair and orderly in how it covers a room. As a mop, it gives hard floors a light wipe, and stuck-on messes still need you. Its weak side is ownership: the app can send it to the wrong room, and some units keep losing Wi-Fi. The bin latch and the water system also break too easily. Shark's own listing calls the boxed robot the AI Ultra 2-in-1, and this is the black-and-silver RV2610WA.

The vacuum half

Vacuuming is where the Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 earns its keep. On hard floors, it lifts the daily layer of dog and cat hair, crumbs and tracked-in grit well. That makes it a good nightly routine for a shedding pet, and dogs and cats tend to take it in stride. Big debris is another matter: larger pieces can get left behind or flicked aside.

Carpet is a step down, though it keeps low carpet tidy between proper vacuums and leaves neat rows. Still, a full-size vacuum earns a weekly pass on carpeted rooms. Thin rugs are its weakest surface, especially where a rug meets a hard floor.

Its coverage is orderly: tight back-and-forth rows go over the same ground more than once, so few patches get skipped. Shark calls this grid pattern Matrix Clean. It credits Matrix Clean with 30% better carpet cleaning than a single pass by its RV2610WD. Suction can also be turned up in the app for heavier messes.

Heavy shedding tests it, however: in a house with several big shedders, it can fall behind. Hair can also pack into the robot or the base and need clearing by hand. Large floors take patience as well, since a whole-home job can run for hours with a recharge stop. Shark's Recharge & Resume feature is meant to pick the job up from there.

Swapping the Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 into mop mode

Mopping starts with a swap: the standard dust bin comes out. In its place goes the mop module, with its own water tank, dust compartment and pad. With that module fitted, the Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 vacuums as it mops. It cannot empty itself at the base, though, so the module gets emptied and rinsed by hand after the run, and the pad goes in the wash.

The water tank is small, and one tank covers a few rooms of hard floor. On a bigger stretch it can run dry partway through, and the job then stops until the tank is refilled. Consequently, a large mopping job may need a refill and a second start.

Rugs take some planning, too, although the app lets you mark carpet and no-mop areas. However, those zones do not always hold, and the wet pad can end up on a rug. Lifting small rugs and bath mats before a mop run is the dependable answer.

The module also has to come back out before the next self-emptying run. I'd settle into a weekly mop day with daily vacuum runs in between, since swapping modules every day turns a convenience into a chore.

What the pad lifts, and what it leaves

Shark calls the system Sonic Mopping, and its listing pitches a vacuum that mops hard floors at the same time. On hard floors, the Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 gives a light wipe. Dust and the grime of everyday foot and pet traffic come up, and floors look fresher for it. Tile, vinyl plank, laminate and wood floors all suit it. A bottle of Shark's cleaning solution comes in the box.

Its limits are just as clear, however. Dried spills, sticky patches and set-in stains still need a hand, and some floors come out streaky. The pad presses lightly; treat the mop as upkeep between proper cleans.

That makes it a fair weekly freshen-up, though as the main reason to buy a robot, the mop falls short.

Latches, leaks and a one-year warranty

The reliability record is what holds the score down, and two parts carry much of it.

The first is the dust bin's release button, along with the small plastic clips that hold the bin in place. They can snap within weeks, and a bin that will not stay latched stops the robot altogether.

The second is the mop's water system, which can stop putting water on the pad, dispense it unevenly or start leaking, sometimes within the first few months. When it quits, the Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 still vacuums, so the robot carries on as a single-purpose machine.

Other faults are scattered but real: brushroll-stuck errors that keep coming back after a clean, units that stop working inside a year or two, and a few that arrive dead or fail in their first week.

Repairs are the other half of the problem: spare bins, mop modules, pads and small clips have been hard to find. Warranty claims on the bin and mop parts have also been turned down, and the warranty itself runs one year. Support can be slow to reach, although a phone call that gets through can sort a fault quickly. Some cases end in a replacement robot, which then has to map the house again.

The HEPA base and weekly upkeep

The self-emptying base is the most convenient part of owning it. It is bagless, with no disposal bags to buy, and Shark rates it to hold up to 60 days of debris. When the robot's bin fills mid-job, it can dock, empty and head back out.

Its HEPA filter carries a Shark rating of 99.97% of dust and allergens down to 0.3 microns, paired with what Shark calls an anti-allergen seal.

Emptying is the loudest moment of any run, a short burst that is far louder than the cleaning itself. While it cleans, noise divides opinion: some homes run it through calls and sleep, while others find it too loud to ignore.

The base is not trouble-free either, since emptying does not always clear the robot's bin. Heavy hair can clog it, and on some units the base's suction is too weak to finish the job. Beyond that, the routine is modest: filters need tapping out or rinsing, and the brushroll needs hair cleared now and then.

Where it gets stuck

The Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 maps with 360-degree LiDAR. Even so, it bumps into furniture as it works and can nudge light pieces around.

Small things on the floor are its real weakness, since loose shoelaces, cords and soft items can catch the brushroll or the wheels. Raised thresholds, sliding-door tracks and closet tracks can strand it, too.

It also wanders through open doors into rooms left off the map. Closing those doors works better than trusting the map to keep it out.

A stuck robot usually stays stuck until someone frees it, so a run started while nobody is home can end early. I'd give the floor a quick pickup of cords, laces and small rugs before each run.

Rooms, zones and one run a day

First mapping can take more than one attempt before the map is right. Once it has a map, the Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 can be steered room by room from the app. The app can name rooms, send the robot to a single room or spot, block no-go areas and mark carpet, and it starts runs remotely or by voice through Alexa.

Its limits show quickly, though: no-go zones are drawn large, so a small one around pet bowls or a stair edge is hard to fit. The schedule allows only one run a day, and while it cleans, the map does not show clearly where it is or which areas it has finished.

Room targeting is the bigger problem, since a job sent to one room can end up in another. Sometimes a map even has to be rebuilt from scratch.

Connection is the other weak spot: some units drop off Wi-Fi every few days and need pairing again. Until someone notices, scheduled runs simply don't happen. A few units also start themselves overnight, even with Do Not Disturb set.

Final Verdict

The Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 does its main job well. In a hard-floored home with a shedding dog or cat, it keeps the daily layer of hair and grit down. Then it empties itself into a bagless HEPA base, and that daily chore is the one it takes off your hands. On top of that, the mop module adds a light weekly freshen-up.

Ownership is where it slips: fragile parts and an app that loses its way are what hold it at 7.2. That score is for a capable daily vacuum whose mop is a bonus to use, not a reason to buy.
