LEVOIT Core 300 Review: Less Dust, Quiet Sleep Mode

Dust, stale smells and stuffy mornings are the problems a LEVOIT Core 300 is bought to fix. Most of the fixing happens out of sight. Less dust settles and smells fade, and the plainest sign is what comes back when it's switched off.

For a bedroom or small living room, this budget-priced purifier does all of that well. Its design centers on a single three-in-one filter and three fan speeds. The costs of living with it are easier to spot. Its top speed is too loud for a light sleeper, while its filter needs replacing about every six months.

Dust on the shelves

Less dust settles in the room it runs in. As a result, dusting comes around less often. The chore won't disappear, though, since a dusty old house still gathers some.

Its filter also shows what it catches. Within a few weeks to a month, the outside of the filter gathers a layer of dust. After a few months, the filter itself comes out plainly dirty. In a house with cats or dogs, the LEVOIT Core 300 also pulls loose fur out of the air. Less of that fur ends up lying around the room.

A furry or dusty room gets more from a higher speed. Levoit lists clean air delivery rates of 153 CFM for dust, 167 for pollen and 143 for smoke. Those figures carry the AHAM VERIFIDE seal, which Levoit describes as an independent check of air cleaning performance and energy efficiency.

Room size decides how much of this shows. Levoit's figures put it at 4.8 air changes an hour in a 222-square-foot room and one an hour at 1,073 square feet. The LEVOIT Core 300 is strongest in a bedroom or a small living room. A bedroom of around 200 square feet is a comfortable fit. In a small apartment, a single unit can cover the main living space. However, a large room is more than one unit can keep up with. Covering a whole house, then, means a unit in each room that matters.

Fewer stuffy mornings

In a bedroom, mornings tend to start less congested. The change can arrive within the first night or two. Sneezing fits and itchy eyes can ease too, including in a room shared with a cat or dog. A carpeted room sees the same easing. Similarly, nights can bring sounder sleep. It can help through pollen season as well. Breathing in the room it runs in can also feel easier within hours.

Levoit rates the filter at 99.97% for particles of 0.1 to 0.3 microns, including pollen, dust and dander. The company adds that its original filter is HEPA-grade while it runs in Sleep Mode. Even so, it eases symptoms without ending them, and regular cleaning still has its place beside it.

After the first month, its work becomes easy to doubt. At that point the filter offers some reassurance, since it keeps filling visibly even when the room feels unchanged. With it switched off for a while, stuffiness and sneezing tend to come back. If only one room gets a purifier, the bedroom is where the LEVOIT Core 300 earns the most.

Smells around the house

Strong smells clear quickly. After a smoky or pungent meal, the kitchen smells fresh again within minutes. Likewise, smells that drift in from another room or from next door fade. Pleasant scents fade just as fast as unpleasant ones.

It also freshens a room while the windows stay shut. That helps when the weather is too hot or too cold to open them. After a few hours of running, a closed-up room feels less stale.

With cats in the house, the litter-box smell drops sharply, including with the unit right beside the box. Dog smells ease too. A musty smell can fade as well. Spread across a house, a few units leave the whole place smelling fresher.

Smoke is the sternest test for the LEVOIT Core 300. Wildfire smoke that seeps indoors clears quickly. During a smoky spell, one unit helps a bedroom. A larger space, however, calls for two units working together. Cigarette smoke from smoking indoors clears as well. Against a smell with a steady source, though, it works hard and cuts the smell without always clearing it completely.

The sound of each speed

It has three fan speeds plus Sleep Mode. Levoit puts Sleep Mode at a near-silent 24dB, and beside a bed it is audible only up close. The lowest fan speed makes a soft, steady hum. Indeed, even a sensitive ear barely picks it up. Sleep Mode sits a step quieter still. The middle speed is clearly audible, yet it blends into the background of a lived-in room. In an office, it does not distract. Each step up is louder than the last, and the top speed is a big jump. At the top, it sounds like a fan on full. At night, that top speed is too loud for a light sleeper.

During the day, the middle speed makes a sensible default. On the lower speeds, it is easy to forget it is running at all. On the higher speeds, it moves a strong stream of air. The top speed is best saved for short bursts, after cooking or a round of cleaning. Its timer suits that routine, switching it off after 2, 4, 6 or 8 hours. Overnight, Sleep Mode or the lowest speed keeps a bedroom quiet enough for sleep. For a bedroom, those quiet settings are the ones that matter, and they are very good.

The controls are simple, and every change of speed is made by hand. The manual explains each button and setting clearly. Once set, the LEVOIT Core 300 can run at one speed around the clock. That suits a set-and-forget routine, though a burst of cooking smoke calls for a change of speed.

The lower speeds double as white noise. For a sleeper who likes a fan running, the hum is a bonus. Turned up, it can also drown out other noise. A room that needs real quiet has Sleep Mode instead.

Light also matters at night. A button switches the display lights off entirely, so that the room stays dark. On its lower settings, with the panel dark, the LEVOIT Core 300 is easy to sleep next to.

A LEVOIT Core 300 on the move

It is bigger than it first appears. It stands 14.2 inches tall on an 8.7-by-8.7-inch footprint and weighs 7.9 pounds. Measuring the spot before ordering saves a surprise. Its look is also sleek and modern. Its plain white finish blends into most rooms, and the build is solid.

At that weight, it's also easy to carry. One unit can move between rooms as the day goes on. Wherever it lands, it takes up little floor space.

The filter under the base

Setup starts at the base. The first filter ships inside it in a plastic bag that has to come off before the first run. After that, it is ready within minutes. The box also holds a manual and a quick-start guide.

Upkeep comes down to that same three-in-one filter. On the LEVOIT Core 300, it sits behind a cover on the underside. Swapping it means tipping the unit over and lifting the old filter out, a job of a minute or so.

The pre-filter forms the outer layer of the filter, and it catches hair and coarse dust first. Between swaps, the pre-filter needs a pass with a vacuum every two to four weeks. That pulls off what it gathers and stretches the life of the filter behind it. Each pass is quick and easy, with the filter lifted out first.

In steady use, a filter lasts about six months. Heavy, round-the-clock use shortens that. Some filters last well past that mark. The check-filter light on the panel gives the cue. Keeping a spare filter on hand avoids a gap when that light comes on.

Running costs and the odd fault

The purifier itself is budget-priced. Its filters are the running cost, and Levoit's own cost enough to notice. At about two a year, they add up over the life of the unit. I'd count those two filters as part of the price.

Cheaper compatible filters are easy to find. Levoit says its own filters give the best fit and filtration. Its listing warns, too, that off-brand filters may be unreliable and may damage the purifier.

Levoit also sells filters for particular jobs. It describes its Smoke Remover filter as aimed at wildfire smoke, and its Pet Allergy filter at dander and odors. Levoit pitches a third, the Toxin Absorber, at smog, toxins and VOCs. The smoke and pet versions drop into the base in place of the original. In a smoky or pet-heavy home, I'd reach for the first two.

A LEVOIT Core 300 can run around the clock for two years or more. Some units develop a fault inside two years, though. Levoit's support has replaced faulty units, and it is responsive.

Final Verdict

Working out of sight suits a background appliance, and this purifier does it well. Its top speed belongs to short daytime bursts, and its filters are a steady cost to budget for.

As a first purifier, it makes a gentle start, with little to learn. A bedroom breathes cleaner air with it running, a strong showing from a budget-tier purifier.
